Charged, again
An update: Steven Avery has now been charged with the murder of that corpse found on his family's property – in fact, he's been charged with mutilating the dead body as well, according to the Associated Press.
I don't think my post earlier this week left much room for doubt on where I stand, but this also seems high time to repeat the fundamental cliché that must always guide American justice: innocent until proven guilty. We just got done haggling over how Wisconsin treated a hunter-turned-Rambo and, despite the conviction, that trial clearly could have gone a touch better (think: the Lautenschlager-led circus-style parade to guilt before a jury was ever seated). Let's allow this one to go through a touch more traditionally, with no grand-standing Attorney General and perhaps even a few partial jurors.
It looks like the evidence is pretty darn convincing. Besides, the Innocence Project is just too darn good at crying foul – I'd hate to see them become Mr. Avery's first two-time victim.
