The death of Coreweekly
Coreweekly is no longer the worst paper in town.
In fact, it's no longer a paper.
Less than a year and a half after starting up, the abysmal Isthmus-imitator has enjoyed its final press run. As the Daily Cardinal is reporting, the paper folded yesterday.
To be sure, Coreweekly had a few highlights during its generally forgettable run. One particularly enjoyable insider account of the D'Angelo scandal comes immediately to mind, and the film reviews were oftentimes stellar.
But there was always that better-assembled, more respected hub of excellent writing bullying Coreweekly off of local newsstands. Indeed, the publication could never touch the quality of The Isthmus, a veritable Madison institution. And in a city with two daily professional papers, two daily student papers, two bi-weekly student papers, The Madison Times and even The Onion all circulating downtown, there simply wasn't room for another weekly culture publication, let alone one that quickly became infamous for excessive white space and cover photos with no corresponding stories.
To those of you who will miss Coreweekly, my condolences. But, personally, I'm just looking forward to seeing what Bill Lueders has to offer us next week.
